The General Medical Council has produced some guidance on when remote consultations may (or may not) be appropriate.

This can be accessed on their website here.

To summarise, there are 3 guiding principles:

  • GMC standards of good practice apply to both face-to-face and remote consultations.
  • If you can’t meet the standards for safe prescribing in a remote consultation, you should change to face-to-face.
  • You should agree with the patient the most suitable method of consultation within the resources available.
